When Can I Change?

The government has rules about when you can change some Medicare insurance plans. There are some exceptions, so if you have a special circumstance contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. If you switch Medicare Supplement plans the insurer may take into consideration pre-existing health conditions. So make sure you ask about the pre-existing health condition rules of the insurance plan you are considering.

Switching Plans* Dates when you can change plans
Medigap to Medigap You can add or drop a Medigap plan at any time. However, existing health conditions may limit your ability to change plans. So ask about how existing health conditions are handled in qualifying for the new plan you are considering.
Medigap to Medicare Advantage Oct. 15 - Dec. 7 is the annual election period, also called the fall open enrollment period.
Medicare Advantage to Medicare Advantage Oct. 15 - Dec. 7 is the annual election period when you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, including those with or without prescription drug coverage included.
Part D Prescription Drug coverage Oct. 15 - Dec. 7 is the annual election period when you can switch plans or join a plan if you have not had one before.
Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare Oct. 15 - Dec 7 and Jan. 1 - Feb. 14 You can leave your Medicare Advantage Plan and switch to original Medicare. If you switch during this period you have until February 14 to join a Medicare Prescription Drug plan.

If you are changing plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), don't wait until the last minute. Give yourself time to read the material, calculate the costs, check with your doctors to see if they are in the network and understand the difference between what you have and the new plan.
