You can change Medigap policies any time. Many people find a review of their Medigap policy during Medicare annual open enrollment period is convenient.
When all the advertising starts up in the Fall for Medicare open enrollment many people think it’s the only time they can change their Medigap policy. Not so. In most cases, if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Supplement plan you can change your Medicare Supplement plan anytime during the year.
However, many people do review their Medicare Supplement plans during open enrollment because they are also reviewing their Medicare Part D plans, which can only be changed during Medicare annual enrollment.
If you are new to Medicare and buying a Medigap policy for the first time you have an initial enrollment period that gives you a big benefit – no medical underwriting! Some people mistakenly call this Medicare Supplement open enrollment period but the right term is initial enrollment period. You have 6 months from the time you are 65 and older and sign up for Part B to select a Medigap plan and not be subject to underwriting. Don’t miss this period!
While there is no Medigap open enrollment period, remember that if you want to switch plans you will probably face medical underwriting. So if you are healthy, changing Medigap plans is not generally a problem. But if you have health conditions you may find that you can’t switch Medigap plans because you can’t pass medical underwriting.
