Medicare and Moving
It is important to let Medicare and your Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription drug plan company know that you are moving immediately. In some cases you won't need to change, but in other cases you may find that you will need or want a different plan in your new home state. Get advice from a Medicare specialist and watch your deadlines!
Medicare Advantage Plans and Prescription Drug Plans
It is very important you check plans in your new location. Even moving a few blocks away may mean you have to switch plans because the plans are so local. Or a move can change the cost of the plan enough that it makes sense to look at other options.
Watch your deadlines! Moving means you have a special enrollment period to switch plans: if you tell your plan company before you move, your chance to switch plans begins the month before the month you move and continues for 2 full months after you move. If you tell them after you move, your chance to change begins that month plus 2 more full months.
If there isn't a Medicare Advantage plan in the state where you are moving to, or you don't want to join one, you can return to Original Medicare and you are guaranteed the right to buy the Medigap policies A, B, C, or F that are sold in the state where you are moving.
Medicare Supplement Plans
Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed renewable, and the company must continue to renew it as long as you pay your premium. The insurance company can, however, change the premium you pay if you move to another state. If you are outside your open enrollment period, the 6-month period when Federal law allows you to buy any Medigap policy you want that is sold in your state, you may have to answer some medical questions to see if you qualify for a different Medigap policy.
